Bowston has a visitor

This summer, SCRT and partners removed Bowston weir. This is the first major weir to be removed on the River Kent, Site of Special Scientific Interest and Special Area of Conservation (SSSI/SAC).
Why you ask? Well by removing weirs, you can restore a rivers form and function, reduce flooding, improve fish migration, improve biodiversity and improve navigation for river users! River restoration really does provide us with so many benefits including to help make our rivers more climate resilient for the future.
But don’t take our word for it..here’s Jeremy Wade explaining why weir removals are so important!

With thanks to all the partners of this film, including Environment Agency, Dam Removal Europe, World Fish Migration Foundation, WWF, Forest Peace Foundation, National Postcode Loterij, Jeremy Wade and Icon Films.

NEWS – BOWSTON WEIR REMOVED
Natural processes are now able to shape this stretch of river over time. The renaturalisation of the river will happen gradually over the next couple of months/years but will have a significant impact on the biodiversity and the species of the area.
