Trout in the Classroom is back!

Following a successful trial last year, we’re thrilled to announce that Trout in the Classroom is back.

After working with Grayrigg C Of E Primary School for the last couple of years on a variety of river topics, they happily volunteered to host Trout in the Classroom this year.

If you followed progress last year, you’ll know this is an amazing opportunity for children to learn about Brown trout and rivers. It’s immersive, interactive learning at its best, and one that will stay with the children and teaching staff forever.

First day back after Christmas, Emma and Kath set up the Trout tank in the Oaks classroom (Year 3 & 4). The tank has an external filter, a chiller and aerator to help replicate river conditions. Well, as best as possible that is. The class are now responsible for looking after the trout through all life stages. SCRT will return to help them release the trout into Lambrigg Beck, just before Easter.

We provided a brief overview in a whole school assembly, with a more informed presentation to the class so they know how to look after the trout. An information/activity pack was left to support the class with the project.

A couple of days later Kath and Emma returned with the Brown trout eggs. They replicated a couple of redds (scrapes in the gravels) where the eggs were gently placed and covered.

The whole school are so excited to be involved, seeing new life unfold before their very eyes!

Look out for regular updates.
