We’re stepping up for Windermere. Our ongoing programme of advice and support about private sewage systems is in full swing and Sam, our engagement officer is engaging people locally.

It all started in a Love Windermere Partnership sewage hot-spotting exercise. Partners collaborated and shared mapping data about private sewage system locations around the Leven catchment (this includes Windermere lake and beyond). Various areas have been highlighted as target areas, based on geology, mains sewage data, permitted sites and more. This information has helped guide this programme and continues to be a valuable source for other opportunities for the area.

Funded by the UK Government, Windermere STEP will target four of key areas; Sawrey, Troutbeck, Grasmere and Esthwaite. The programme aims to engage with local homeowners, businesses, parish councils and the public about private sewage systems, the impacts they can have and how to maintain them properly.

STEPs so far

We have already developed several information packs, are attending local events and knocking on doors. Through the programme we will evaluate systems based on a risk assessment framework. This has been developed specifically for STEP by our team. Supported by expert contractors, we will also be able to offer free of charge  technical assessments and emptying services.

SCRT are leading this programme, with support from Lake District Foundation, to help local communities and help improve water quality. An engagement toolkit will ensure the legacy of the programme throughout the country.  Actions to reduce the sources of pollution in the catchment,  have been identified by the Love Windermere Partnership.
