Richard’s passion for the water environment stems from a joyful youth exploring the banks, catchments and coastlines of the UK. After earning a degree in Geology from the University of St Andrews, he spent time working for a multinational integrated energy company, mining companies, civil and environmental consultancies, and more recently for United Utilities. During this time, he observed the decline in the health of our terrestrial and marine waters, prompting him to found Hydrohub Consulting Ltd in 2023 which specialises in protecting and improving these environments. As a Chartered Scientist, Chartered Geologist, and European Geologist, his expertise spans sustainable water management, including the design of water and wastewater treatment works, flood risk management, aquifer protection in hydrocarbon fields, and the safe operation of water supply reservoirs.
Richard’s deep connection to the south Cumbrian catchments stems from activities like climbing in the Duddon Valley, fishing on Windermere, swimming in the Sprint, and paddling on Coniston. Having lived by the River Kent for the past eight years, he understands the complexity and diversity of these environments and the evolving challenges they face. As a trustee, he is excited to help SCRT conserve and enhance our special watery places in the most socially engaging and environmentally sustainable way.
