Every year ‘Balsam Bashes’ are organised by volunteers and members of the Kent Catchment Partnership. Himalayan Balsam is a fast growing invasive non-native species and can be found in several areas in and around the the country. With the help of volunteers, we attempt to control the spread and eradicate the infestation through hard work, monitoring and repeat visits over several years.

Some facts and figures from 2019:

• 18 work parties took place in the Kent catchment, plus a further 9 work parties organised at Lambrigg Beck

• 45 volunteers attended 1 or more events.

• Over 650 hours was spent Bashing Balsam in Summer 2019.

Rydal

Over July & August, we worked in collaboration with Friends of the Lake District to arrange two ‘Fight the Aliens’ days in Rydal. Over 90 volunteers were involved over the two days to pull and strim the invasive species from over eight different sites around the village. The result was around 640,000 individual plants pulled and even more strimmed! Thank you to everyone who came to lend a hand. We hope to have similar events next year.
